YAGUL - Mondragón Tour - Rock Climbing Oaxaca

Yagul is an archaeological site and former city-state associated with the Zapotec civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. The site was declared one of the country’s four Natural Monuments on 13 October 1998. The site is also known locally as Pueblo Viejo (Old Village) and was occupied at the time of the Spanish Conquest. After the Conquest the population was relocated to the nearby modern town of Tlacolula where their descendants still live.

The crag of Yagul is part of the Climbing Oaxaca, it is located to 55 minutes on the road to Mitla on the Caballito Blanco plateau (UNESCO World Heritage Site) close to the archaeological zone with the same name, this area has some caves in the Tlacolula Valley, you can find some rock shelters with cave paintings dating back to 12,000 years old, in which the earliest remains of domesticated plants were also found, speaking about the crag, you will find an incredible 22-meter overhanging wall, the type of rock is Rhyolitic TonaToba, This amazing rock formation stands imposingly on a plain full of local flora and unique mysticism.

The crag of Yagul was discovered by Livingstone Monteverde, one of his first routes were ¨La Rana 10b and ¨the origin of life 10d¨ equipped by him in 1999, years later in 2005 Carlos Mondragón, Erick López, Tonatiuh Beltrán, Juan Carlos Mayoral, Javier Serratos and Javier Canche del Toro continued with the equipment of the beautiful overhanging wall, on that date 6 routes were bolted. “Asquerosa Felicidad”(Disgusting Hapinness) the first and iconic 5.13a of the state of Oaxaca were bolted by Javier Canche. Years later Carlos Mondragón bolted “La Chocante” 5.11a in honor to the demise of Canche, a very beautiful route on a dihedral of this imposing wall .
